PROVIDENCE, RI – The Providence Fire Alarm Office received Box 2824 around 1045hrs on September 11, 2008 for the address of 670 North Main Street. This 13 story occupied apartment complex known as Charlesgate North Apartments is home for elderly and lower income residents. The building has seen its fair share of apartment fire in the past. Engine 7 arrived to find smoke showing from the 7th floor on the North Main Street side which was designated side “1”. The 3rd Battalion Chief ordered a second alarm once the working fire was confirmed due to SOP’s for a high rise fire. Ladder 4, using a reserve Mack Backer (Ladder 2), set up on the side 1-4 corner raising its boom up to the fire floor. Engine 4 pumped into the standpipe system as Engine 7 made the fire floor. The Jakes found fire in the kitchen area in one apartment. As Engine 7 knocked the fire down companies went to the apartment above to check for vertical extension, which was negative. The fire was knocked down quickly once lines were placed into action. Second alam companies helped with evacuation and stood fast for orders. EMS transported one victim to a local hospital with a report of smoke inhalation. The fire was placed under control in about a half hour.
