Smithfield, RI - Box 2260 was transmitted around 0430am on December 15, 2009 for the address of 40 Farnum Pike. Engine 2 arrived to find smoke showing from a "L" shaped 200x100 2 story vacant Elm Brook Nursing Home. Engine 2 pulled into the lot on side 4 and began to investigate. The firefighters found heavy fire running in the basement and went into attack mode using a 1.75" attack line through the bulkhead. Engine 1 laid over 500' on 5" LDH supply line into the scene to establish water supply. Medic 1 and 2 initiated primary searches throughout the entire structure. The OIC special called a North Providence engine, ladder, and chief for attack operations and a Johnston engine for a rapid intervention team. North Providence Ladder 1 assisted in open up operations on all of the boarded up windows and also opened the roof. North Providence Engine 1 opened up the inside "L" corner to find pockets of fire running the walls to the second floor. Johnston Engine 2 set up for RIT on side-4 near command and the first due engine. Coverage to the empty Smithfield firehouses was provided by Lincoln Engine 10 (Farnum Pike Station), North Smithfield Engine 2 (Log Road Station), and Harmony 21 (Headquarters). The bulk of the heavy fire was knocked down in 40 minutes with extensive overhaul to follow for several hours. The RI Fire Marshal will be assisting the Smithfield Marshal for cause and origin. The building was reported to be vacant for 10+ years and is slated for sale. No injuries were reported during the incident.
