NORTH SMITHFIELD, RI (PROVIDENCE COUNTY) - Early Christmas morning the North Smithfield, RI Fire Department received a residential fire alarm for the address of 8 Mara Lane. Engine 2 and Ladder 2 along with out of town companies responded while Santa Claus finished up his deliveries. Engine 2 arrived to find heavy smoke and fire conditions in an occupied 3000 square foot 2 story dwelling. Several occupants were forced to jump from the upper floors to escape this fast moving fire and were transported by ALS Rescues to RI Trauma Center. The order to fight this fire on a defensive attack was called due to the deteriorating conditions and lack of water. The OIC ordered quick 2nd and 3rd alarms due to manpower and the lack of a hydrant system in this second of town. The several hand lines were stretched had to be used sparingly until a water supply could be established by the tanker task force. The bulk of the fire was knocked down in an hour’s time leaving pockets of hidden fire. Mutual aid responded into the scene and also to fill in the empty firehouses.
