CENTRAL FALLS, RI (PROVIDENCE COUNTY) – Firefighters responded to 121 Clay Street around 0930hrs on October 14, 2008 for a reported building fire. Engine 2 and Truck 1 arrived to find heavy smoke and fire showing on side 1 from a setback 2.5sty wdfm dwelling. Engine 2 firefighters stretched in a 1.75 foam hand line to the first floor to begin the fire attack. Truck 1 setup to open the roof above the fire from an adjacent parking lot. Engine 1 and Rescue 1 assisted Engine 2 with open up duties to find the hidden fire extending up the balloon framed walls into the ceiling joist. Command requested a 2nd alarm due to the minimum manning of 8 men on the first alarm. The 2nd alarm brought in the oncoming shift, Pawtucket Engine 2 and Ladder 1, Lincoln Ladder 5 (FAST), and station coverage. Station coverage was provided by Cumberland and Providence. The fire was contained to the bays around a window on side 1 with extension into the ceiling joist. Reports of handymen heating and scraping paint on the window casings started this fire. The torch ignited the wood behind the casing and vinyl siding extending upwards. The handymen tried to quell the fire on their own with a garden hose before calling 911. The Red Cross and Salvation Army Canteen unit responded in also to provide aid. There were no reported injuries.
