Providence, RI, - The south end firefighters were awoken just before shift change around 0630hrs on July 20, 2009 for a reported fire in the area of Broad Street and Gallup Street. Engine 10 and Ladder 5 arrived first due to find heavy fire conditions on the third floor and attic of a vacant 3sty wood framed 30x60 dwelling. The incident commander requested several other companies over the working fire assignment to the scene. The heavy fire eventually spread throughout the entire attic requiring the OIC to pull all firefighters out for defensive operations. Waterways from Tower Ladders 1, 2, and Ladder 5 played their master streams into the fully involved attic area knocking the fire fire down in 15 minutes. Firefighters were allowed to re-enter the structure to continue fire suppression and overhaul operations. The fire is being investigated by the Providence Fire Arson Squad.
