Smithfield, RI – The police received a burglar alarm for 99 Pleasant View Ave around 2340hrs on May 18, 2009. As the cruisers arrived heavy smoke was pushing from this 3 store plaza at 99 Pleasant View Ave (Rte-116). As the police reported a working fire, Smithfield Fire Alarm was also answering several calls of the fire on the 911 lines. Engines 1, 2, 3, Medics 1, 2 and Chief 2 responded to the scene. Chief 2 arrived to find a well involved 50x100 1sty concrete block building with a trussed roof system. The OIC reported that the fire was going to be fought in a defensive mode as apparatus arrived on scene. Heavy fire was coming from the center store which was Bob’s Place Restaurant and was rapidly extending to the stores on the sides. The left side business was 1 Stop Collectibles and the right being Stop and Go Groceries and Deli. A special call for a ladder from Johnston Fire and an engine from Harmony Fire for RIT was called minutes into the blaze. Several big lines and 1 ¾” hand lines were placed into action through the front glass windows into the ceiling and attic area. This aggressive attack had the bulk of the fire knocked down in 20 minutes. There were no injuries reported. The fire was investigated by the Smithfield Fire Marshal’s Office and possible ruled to be electrical in nature. The building is being considered a total loss.
