All Gloucester Fire Companies along with a Smithfield engine responded to the area of James Street for a reported barn fire early in the morning of August 26, 2008. The chief arrived to find a 30x40 2sty wdfm barn well involved and reported a "Code Red". The structure collapsed quickly due to the heavy fire that was free burning for some time. Several lines operated to wet down the remains of the barn and to stop the slow spreading grass fire. A tanker shuttle operation was used to bring water into the scene due to the lack of hydrants in the area. Mutual aid responded in to cover the Gloucester fire houses from Scituate, Burrillville, and nearby Connecticut fire departments.
