CUMBERLAND, RI (PROVIDENCE COUNTY) - Cumberland FAO dispatched a first alarm assignment to 1150 Mendon Road for reported flames coming from a structure. Cumberland Engine 22 arrived finding heavy smoke and fire from a 1 story wdfm beauty salon. Companies attempted an aggressive interior attack but had to withdraw due to a heavy fire load of aerosol hair products stored inside. Heavy fire broke through the roof once Cumberland Truck 5 completed the vent work. Truck 5 set up their aerial and waited for command to order the defensive operations to start. Several big lines, a deck gun, and a ladder pipe had the bulk of the heavy fire knocked down in roughly an hour. While firefighters were battling this fire, a second fire was reported about a 1/2 mile away on Mendon Road at a restaurant. Mutual aid companies along with recalled Cumberland firefighters knocked down a small kitchen fire. Both fire are deemed suspicious and are being investigated by Cumberland Police and the Rhode Island State Fire Marshals Office.
