Cumberland, RI - An improperly disgarded cigarette sparked a fire in an outside wall of this early 1800's "L" Shaped rooming house at 2510 Mendon Rd. around 0945hrs on a rainy Friday of April 9, 2010. An occupant smelled and saw smoke from emitting from the wall near an exterior door and summoned the fire department. Stations 4, 2, 5, and 1 along with Rescues 1 and 2 responded on the working fire response. Engine 41 arrived to find fire in two bays on the inside corner of the "L". Fire stop blocking in the walls contained the flame spread as firefighters opened the exterior siding and sheathing. One hand line was used to extinguish the fire. Engine 22, Truck 1, and Truck 5 assisted with searches and checked for fire extension with their thermal cameras. Engine 42 laid out roughly 700' of LDH feeder from Evergreen Street and Boardman Avenue into the scene. Lincoln, RI Engine 10 responded to the scene and Lincoln Engine 4 covered Cumberland Station 2. The RI State Fire Marshal was requested to the scene to assist with origin and cause.
