North Smithfield, RI Firefighters responded to the Rustic Drive In on Rte-146 Suthbound around noon on June 4, 2008. Police arrived to find heavy smoke showing from the concession stand building. Lincoln Engine 1 responded in on the line box and also arrived first on scene. Lt. Mike Gleason reported heavy smoke and fire showing from a "mushroom" vent on the roof. Lincoln Engine 1 set up on side 2 and stretched in a 1.75 attack line. North Smithfield Engine 2, Tanker 1, and the chiefs arrived a few minutes later. NSFD Engine 2 stretched a back up line to the "reel room" on the roof area. The fire was knocked down in the kitchen area and then companies opened up the vent system to knock that fire down. Nasonville Tanker 33 was requested to the scene to back up NSFD Tanker 1 due to the lack of hydrants in the area. The fire was placed under control 45 minutes after the intial alarm. The NSFD Fire Marshal along with the State Fire Marshal will be investigating the cause and origin.
