Providence, RI - Providence Engine 10 called smoke showing from their quarters on Broad Street on February 16, 2009 around 1500hrs for a reported dwelling on fire at 345-47 Willard Ave. The "Broad Street Bullies" arrived to find a 30x50 2.5sty wdfm occupied with heavy smoke and fire rapidly extending from the 2nd floor. An aggressive interior attack was initiated by the 10's and 11's with Ladder 5 going to the roof to open up. The OIC pulled all interior companies out of the dwelling about 15 minutes into the battle due to the deteriorating conditions on the upper floors on side 3 and 4. Heavy fire began to vent out of the eaves and dormers once all companies were outside safely. Deck guns, ladder pipes, and tower ladders doused the heavy overlapping fire down allowing the interior operations to continue again. The upper floors were reported to be under construction at the time of the fire allowing the fire to take possession a lot quicker. The first floor was occupied at the time of the fire and all of the occupants did safely evacuate as companies arrived. Several special called companies supplemented the working fire assignment. One firefighter was transported for an unknown injury early into the fire. The cause and origin is under investigation by the Providence Fire Department.
