Woonsocket Fire Department responded to the area of Pond and East School Streets for a reported dwelling fire around 11:00am on May 18, 2008. Engine 3 arrived to find heavy fire extending rapidly on side 3 of a 4sty wdfm occupied dwelling that was vinyl sided. The fire had jumped into the windows and started to extend inwards. Handlines were stretched to side 3 and inside to the upper floors that were lighting up. An aggressive interior attack was attempted for 20 minutes before the OIC pulled out crews due to the rapidly deteriorating conditions. The fire took control of the upper floor and attic in minutes after the last company was pulled out. Big lines, deck guns, and ladder pipes opened up to drown the heavy fire. Companies stayed on scene for hours to hit hot spots. No cause has been determined as of yet. The building was a total loss with emergency demolition slated for the next day.
